Shirley Grosskreutz, 74, died November 30, 2001

Shirley was born July 2, 1927, in Clayton, WI to Conrad and Jenny (Carlson) Peterson. She was baptized on August 7, 1927 at Faith Lutheran Church, Clayton, and confirmed on June 23,1941. Shirley attended Clayton school and graduated in 1945. On June 11,1948, she married Lyle Grosskreutz in Clayton. They were soon blessed with the birth of five children, sons Scott, Michael and Tom, and daughters Debra and Trudi. Shirley was a homemaker and farmer during the early years of her marriage. She then began working parttime outside of home at Harlan’s IGA, Holiday Foods and Gibson Card Company. Shirley was church organist at Silver Creek for most of her life and also accompanied many young artists with music ensembles and area choirs. She gardened, loved bird watching, was a 4-H leader, volunteer day manager at Yours, Mine & Ours Thrift Store and active member of the Concordia Club. Most recently she was office manager for Grosskreutz Crop Insurance.

All family gatherings revolved around her. The grandchildren were her pride and joy. The newest addition, a great grandchild, was named for Lyle; she treasured that very much. Shirley enjoyed school activities, concerts and was a avid Brewer and Packer follower. She traveled to Switzerland, Canada and to many of the states. She’ll be remembered for her flexibility, pleasant demeanor, willingness to help, and in the food stand at the Threshing Bee.

She is survived by three sons, Scott (Tonja) and Michael (Monica), both of Clayton, and Tom (Brenda) of Clear Lake; two daughters, Debra (Dale) Scribner of Clayton and Trudi (David) Pabst of Turtle Lake; 13 grandchildren, a great grandson, Carson Lyle Grosskreutz; a sister, Jeanette (Donald) Heideman of Eau Claire, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lyle, 3 brothers, Pete, Lyle and Melvin and 1 sister, Lilian and an infant son.

Dorothy Marie Reichert, 76, died January 6, 2003

She was born on May 29, 1926, to Edward and Ellen (Lindstrom) McNeely at St. Paul, Minn., where she grew up and received her education. She later moved to the Cumberland area.

She married Harold A. Reichert on June 29, 1953, at Watertown, S.D. After their marriage, she became a homemaker and they farmed south of Turtle Lake until retirement.

She was a member of Moon Lake Threshermen's Association in Clayton.

She enjoyed dancing, traveling, and reading. In recent years she enjoyed going to the casino.

Surviving are daughters, Kathleen “Kathy” Benson of Turtle Lake and Sandra Kallenbach of Almena; a son, Ted of Turtle Lake; grandchildren, Brandon, Dana, Nicole, and Jeremiah; sisters, Muriel “Mickey” Gehrman of Turtle Lake and Evelyn Dardine of Cameron; and a brother Scotty McNeely of Seiku, Wash.

She is proceeded in death by her husband in January of 1991, a daughter, a sister, and two brothers.

Gloria Bernstein, 59, died May 7, 2003

Services for Gloria Bernstein, 59, were Saturday, May 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Clayton, with the Revs. Loren and Linda Schumacher officiating.

Organist was Carol Van Heuklom.

Casketbearers were Anthony Fall, Doug Edman, Todd Nielsen, Donald Lutz, John Davis, Brett Weller, Richard Lutz and Glendon Lutz.

Interment was at the Clayton Cemetery with the Williamson Funeral Home of Amery, assisting the family.

Gloria Florence Bernstein was born on Jan. 27, 1944, in Stillwater, Minn., the youngest of 11 children of Helen (nee Kotthoff) and Harry Lutz. She grew up and attended school in Stillwater.

She was married to Edwin D. Bernstein on June 25, 1960, in Clayton and two daughters were born.

After marriage, the couple lived in Hammond. In 1968, they moved to Somerset where they would live until moving to Clayton in 2001. While living in Somerset, she taught Sunday school, was active with the ALCW at Christ Lutheran Church, and drove school bus for 26 years.

On Wednesday, May 7, she died at the Lakeview Hospital, Stillwater.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Helen; sisters, Violet, Lorraine, Delores and Betty Lou; and brother, Ronnie.

She is survived by her husband, Ed; daughters, Deborah (Todd) Nielsen and Barbara Bernstein; brothers, Donald (Marvel), Richard (Barb), and Glendon (Barbara); sisters, Bernice and Gladys.

Jim Marlett, 66, died May 10, 2003

James “Jim” S. Marlett, age 66, of rural Clayton died suddenly at his home while playing with his year-old grandson on Saturday, May 10, 2003.

James Sidney Marlett was born on January 15, 1937, in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, the son of Howard and Gladys (Thomas) Marlett. Jim grew up in the Clayton area and was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Clayton. He attended Hilson School and graduated from Clayton High School in 1955.

On September 17, 1960, he was married to Margaret Ann Ketz at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church where he later became a member. Together they owned a dairy farm in Vance Creek Township for many years and raised three children, James, Nathan and Anastacia. Jim also kept busy driving a petroleum fuel truck in the 1970’s. In his spare time he collected and restored John Deere tractors and was an active and founding member of the Moon Lake Threshermen's Association. His favorite activity, however, was spending time with his three grandsons. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Gladys Marlett.

He was survived by his wife, Marge Marlett, Clayton; two sons, James “Jimmy” Michael Marlett, Clayton, and Nathan Aaron (Janette) Marlett, Clear Lake; a daughter, Stacia Marlett, Hopkins, MN; three grandchildren, Sterling Karl Marlett, Colton Sidney Marlett and Jarrett Kenseth Marlett, all of Clear Lake; three brothers, Les (Janet) Marlett, Clear Lake, Larry Marlett, Almena and David Marlett, Clayton; three sisters, (twin) Jane Anton, Turtle Lake, Lorna (Joe) Prusak, Almena and Sue (Rick) Paulson, Clear Lake; along with many relatives, family and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Clayton, Wisconsin. Father Christopher Wojcik officiated. Music was provided by the Holy Trinity Church Choir.

Pallbearers were Bruce Ganrud, Kevin Marlett, Michael Paulson, Brad Prusak, Joe Prusak and Keith Smead. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Fall, Ted Olson, Gene Ness and Milton Smead.

Edward G. Peetz, 59, died January 23, 2004

Edward Peetz, 59, of Clayton died Friday, January 23, 2004 at St. Croix Valley Good Samaritan Center in St. Croix Falls, WI. He was born October 27, 1944 in Amery, WI to Edward and Myrtle (Hilpert) Peetz. He was married in St. Paul Park, MN on May 18, 1968 to Tracey Harrington. The couple lived and worked in the St. Paul area where Ed worked for the State of Minnesota. They later relocated to rural Clayton when Ed worked for IDS Financial Services until his retirement.

Ed’s interest in the local schools, athletics, and communities was his passion. He served many years on the Clayton School Board, Amery Hospital Board, Clayton Lions Club, Antique Car Club, Moon Lake Thresherman’s Association and numerous other organizations. He was an avid collector of coins and military memorabilia and enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Tracey Peetz of St. Paul, MN; three brothers, Les (Carol) Peetz, Wally (Cheryl) Peetz, and John Peetz, all of Clayton; three sisters, Marjorie Frederick, Mary (Chuck) Peterson, and Jean (Dale) Pabst, all of Turtle Lake; his aunt and uncle, Ruth and Tom Vincent of Brooklyn Center, MN; fourteen nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at St. Ann Catholic Church, Turtle Lake, with Father Dennis Mullen officiating. Interment of cremains was at St. Ann Cemetery, Turtle Lake.

Donald L. Grivna, 61, died April 19, 2004

Donald Lee Grivna was born in St. Paul, MN on September 16, 1942, the son of Peter and Edna Grivna. After graduating from high school he attended UW-River Falls. He also completed some graduate courses at the University of Minnesota. On August 5, 1961 he was united in marriage to Mary Coleman. He worked as a sales rep for Dow Chemical for many years. He enjoyed his five acres in California. He raised sweet corn to sell at the Farmer’s Market. He enjoyed that activity and served on the Foothill Farmers Market Board for several years. Donald enjoyed getting the family together so he organized many family get-togethers at baseball camps. He loved the 49ers, but the Wisconsin blood ran deep as he was also a Packer fan. With the operation of his little hobby farm came the collecting of tractors, but they had to be John Deere. Donald died in Penryn, California on Monday, April 19, 2004 at the age of 61.

We was preceded in death by his parents; brother Randy; sisters, Mary, Karen and Diane. Left to mourn are his wife Mary, Penryn, CA; son Mark Grivna, Land O’ Lakes, FL; daughter Ellen Grivna, Antelope, CA; brother Dennis Grivna, Rice Lake, WI; sister Jannelle Knutson, Foley, MN; one granddaughter, Katherine, Mansfield, TX; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Prairie Farm, WI with Rev. Oscar Twedt officiating. Interment was at the Ackers Cemetery. The Williamson Funeral Home in Amery assisted the family with arrangements.

Gene M. Ness, 66, died June 1, 2005

Gene Maynard Ness was born on March 2, 1939, in Clayton, Wisconsin, to Chester and Fern (Torgerson) Ness. He grew up in Clayton graduating from Clayton High School in 1957.

He held a job at the Mobil Station in Richardson during high school and for a period of time after graduation. He also worked at Scott Atwater Outboard Motors in Minneapolis.

He met Elaine Rose Lind in 1957. They were united in marriage on June 28, 1958, in Centuria, Wisconsin. Three children were born and together they raised Marty, Maureen and Maury.

He worked at Midland Coop in Milltown for six years and worked a hobby farm in South Milltown after they were married. He attended vocational school in Eau Claire to become a lineman. He moved his family to Amery in 1973.

He was employed at Polk Burnett Electric for 35-1/2 years as a lineman and foreman until his retirement in 1999.

He was an avid fisherman all his life and loved to travel. He loved working on his antique tractors to restore them to perfect condition. He was a member of the IBEW and served as a steward. He was also a member of the Moon Lake Thresherman’s Association and the Amery Senior Center.

Gene died at home on June 1, 2005, after a 5 year battle with lymphoma cancer. He was 66 years of age.

He was preceded in death by a son, Maury Ness; his parents, Chester Ness and Fern Ness Sollman; and nephew, Terry Ness.

He is survived by his wife, of 47 years, Elaine Ness of Amery; son, Marty Ness of Amery; daughter Maureen (Eugene) Drinkman of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Carissa (Mark) Greschner of New Richmond, Adam Drinkman of Clear Lake and Scott Drinkman of Clear Lake; great grandchild, Bret Greschner.

He also leaves a brother, Larry (June) Ness of Hammond and a sister Donna (Greg) Kaczmarski of Deer Park; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amery with Very Reverend John Drummy and Deacon Bud Heiser officiating.

The St. Joseph Choir provided music. Arlene Dado was the organist.

Honorary pallbearers were Lyle Sorensen, Marlyn Trantow, Ray Johnson, Wayne Larson, Lester Jeska, Marge Marlett, Jerry Lind and Harold Golz.

Casketbearers were Adam Drinkman, Scott Drinkman, Mark Greschner, Randy Ness, Lonnie Ness and Greg Kaczmarski.

Interment was at the Amery Cemetery. The Williamson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Gene Taber, 70, died May 31, 2005

Gene H. Taber, 70, Barron, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.

He was born March 3, 1935, at Barron to Harold and Jenny Taber. He attended Barron schools.

He married Ona Brekken on October 8, 1960. He was a truck driver until he retired in 1980.

He was a member of the Hungry Hollow Steam and Gas Engine Club, Badger Blacksmiths and other blacksmith organizations. Gene also collected gas engines, old tractors, toy tractors and more.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Dawn (Duane) Branish; a son, Ward (Sue); granddaughters, Alysha, Melissa, Amanda and Desiree; a sister, Shirley (Kenneth) Glaser; a brother, Bruce (Bobbie); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 6, at Calvary Baptist Church, Barron, with Rev. John Terpstra officiating.

The Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, handled arrangements.

Even though Gene was not a member of Moon Lake Thresherman’s Association he helped out in the Blacksmith Shop. He and his wife never missed going on our fall trip.

Milt Ostermann, 78, died March 1, 2006

Milt Ostermann died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 having fought a valiant battle with lung cancer. He was born August 18, 1928 in Turtle Lake, WI where he grew up and received his education. In 1946, August, Milt, and Bud formed August Ostermann & Sons, a gravel hauling business. Milt served in the U.S. army from 1951 - 1953. He married Joretta Splatt on July 21, 1952, in Oakland, CA. They returned to live in Almena, WI.

In 1954 he and his brother, Bud, formed Ostermann Sand and Gravel, Inc., followed in 1957 by Yellow River Supply Corp., operating both until 1984. Milt was active in a variety of businesses during his life time, including several banks, PRO Earth Movers, and Glacier Rock.

Milt enjoyed hunting, fishing, Harleys and raising Arabian horses. He was a member of the Turtle Lake Lions Club, Almena VFW, Turtle Lake American Legion and the Moon Lake Threshermen Assoc. Milt was also a member and served as an elder at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Almena.

He is survived by his wife, Joretta of Turtle Lake; three daughters, Jorene (Tom) Lingen of Cumberland, Michele (Mark) Kallenbach of Minneapolis and Janelle (Mark) Etten of Chetek; two sons, Daniel (Gayle) Ostermann of Menomonie and David Ostermann (Yvonne Kemp) of Turtle Lake; five grandchildren; one brother, Alvin “Bud” (Roxanne) Ostermann of Turtle Lake; and five sisters, Edna Fernstrom of New Richmond, Ella Kunkel and Freda McGuine of Turtle Lake, Leona Mengel of Fox River Grove, IL and Lillian Hall of Barrington, IL. Milt was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Marie, Eileen, Evelyn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Almena, WI. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Turtle Lake, WI.

Marvin Mathisen, 66, died October 8, 2006

A longtime North St. Paul resident, Marvin Mathisen, 66, died October 8, 2006 of a heart attack. He had triple-bypass heart surgery 12 years ago.

In 1986, Marv completed his high school equivalency certificate and started his tow-truck business with one truck. Before that, he had worked as a driver for many years at Bishop Towing in St. Paul. Earlier, he had worked in the railroad industry and as a trucker.

In 1999, when his son Dean took over the Maplewood-based D&D towing, Marv continued to lend a hand. He also loved to tinker with old cars he bought to sell.

He liked spending time at his cabin on Moon Lake, south of Turtle Lake, WI, and was excited about the garage he recently built there. Marv was an avid singer on Friday nights at the Moon Lake tavern. He was at the cabin at the time of his death.

In addition to his son Dean of North St. Paul, Marv is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol; daughter Debbi Berman of North St. Paul; sons Dan of Maplewood and Dale of White Bear Lake; and 12 grandchildren.

LeRoy Humphrey, 78, died July 2, 2006

LeRoy “Peach” D. Humphrey, 78, of White Bear Lake, surrounded by his family, died in his home July 2, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. Preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Minnie Humphrey of Turtle Lake, brother Jim Humphrey, and faithful animal companions. Survived by wife of 56 years Margaret “Marty”, daughters Debra (Robert) Wild, Susan Humphrey and Kelly Humphrey, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one brother, three sisters, one aunt, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends. He loved laughter, joking, music, nature and his “sugarbush”. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. A funeral service were held Saturday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Cross Lutheran Church, Maplewood, MN. Peach entertained at the Threshing Bee for 19 years.

John C. Norberg, 79, died July 26, 2006

John C. Norberg, 79, Prairie Farm, WI, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Barron Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1927, to John and Christine (Wiger) Norberg on the family farm in the Town of Prairie Farm, Barron County, where he was raised and attended school.

On June 20, 1953, he married Adell Dillan in the Town of Arland. John spent his entire life in the Prairie Farm area and was involved in many community functions there. He served as a supervisor on the Prairie Farm Town Board for several years, was a member of United Lutheran Church, Prairie Farm, where he served on the church council, and was a charter member of the Moon Lake Threshermen's Association.

He held a strong love for family, church and friends. Farming, sawing lumber, threshing, blacksmithing and steam engines were passions he shared with many.

John's family would like to acknowledge all of the visits and kindness shown during his time of illness. It was most appreciated.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Roger (JoAnn), Wayne (Sue) and Brian (Lisa), all of Prairie Farm; a daughter, Brenda (Gordon) Scheil of Prairie Farm; grandchildren, Matthew Norberg, Christina Schanofer, Amanda Wysocki, Rebecca, Maria, Karl and Koltt Norberg, Tara Young and Grandon Scheil; a brother, Willis of Prairie Farm; a sister, Mable Hanson of Prairie Farm; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

His parents; a brother, Benny; and a sister, Onita Norberg, preceded him in death.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 29, from United Lutheran Church, Prairie Farm, Rev. Oz Twedt officiating, with interment at Sunset Cemetery, Town of Prairie Farm.

Terry Meyer, 48, died June 28, 2006

Terry Meyer, 48, of Fridley died Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at Trevilla of New Brighton after a lengthy illness. He was born December 21, 1957 in Minneapolis, MN to LeRoy and Judy (Chisholm) Meyer. Terry was raised in the Twin Cities area and graduated from Edison High School in 1975. He served in the US Army from 1976-1978. Terry returned to the Twin Cities area and worked for many years as a laser machinist. He enjoyed fishing and motorcycles. Terry was a “people hauler” at the Threshermen's Threshing Bee.

He is survived by his parents, LeRoy and Judy Meyer of Clayton; one daughter, Rachel Meyer of Fridley; one granddaughter, Mikaila of Fridley; two sisters, Laura Meyer of Cambridge, MN and Lynette Meyer of Los Angeles, CA and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 3, 2006 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Turtle Lake with Father David Lusson officiating. Interment of cremains were at St. Charles Cemetery, Turtle Lake. Military honors were accorded by Donalds-Hylkema Post #37, American Legion.

Leslie "Les" Marlett, 72, died March 13, 2007

Les Marlett died at home surrounded by his loving family after a brief fight with cancer. He was a diligent farmer most of his life who loved the land and his job. Les was also an active member of the Clear Lake community who is sorely missed.

Les is survived by this wife, Janet (Pabst) of Clear Lake, and their three children: Leslie Anna (Dan) Schellinger, Kevin (Jacki) all of Clear Lake and Ramona (Mike) Renfroe of Frederic; four grandchildren: Heather Schellinger, Curtis Renfroe, Nicole Marlett and Katie Marlett; five siblings: Jane Anton of Turtle Lake, Lorna (Joe) Prusak of Almena, Larry (Sherry Klinger) of New Richmond, Sue (Ricky) Paulson of Clear Lake, David Marlett of Clayton. He is also survived by the widow of his brother, Jim, Marge (Ketz) Marlett of Clayton.
